ChatGPT Ads Skip Paid Plans. Does Your B2B Buyer See Them?
ChatGPT ads run only on Free and Go. Business and Enterprise workspaces never show them, so the buyer with the budget may be the one person your campaign cannot reach.
ChatGPT ads can reach almost every kind of user except, quite possibly, the one holding the budget. OpenAI shows ads only on the Free and Go plans. A buyer working inside an employer's ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspace will never see a sponsored unit, however carefully the campaign is targeted, because that account is excluded by design.
The reach is no longer small. On 23 September 2026 OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Ads was rolling out in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan, and that the format was now available in more than 60 countries. Thirty-one European markets, Germany, France, Spain and Italy among them, had been announced on 18 August. Both announcements repeat the same condition: ads go to people on Free and Go, while Plus, Pro and Enterprise stay ad-free. OpenAI's help centre gives the full list. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts have no ads. Neither do accounts identified as belonging to under-18s, nor Temporary Chats.
Two details in that list catch people out. Go is a paid plan, and it carries ads. And a Free user can switch ads off by accepting lower message limits and fewer tools, so not even every free account is in the audience.
Who sees ChatGPT ads in a B2B purchase
The audience for ChatGPT ads is adults on Free or Go accounts, in countries where ads run, who have not opted out. Nothing in that definition concerns the company they work for. It concerns the account open on the screen when the question is asked.
A B2B purchase rarely involves one person, or one account. Take a hypothetical committee buying an industrial chiller:
- The engineer drafting the specification works in the company's Business workspace, because IT approved it and nothing else. No ads, ever.
- The owner of a small distributor that will resell the chiller asks from a personal Free account on a phone. Ads can appear.
- The procurement manager does both: the workspace at the desk, the free app on the train home. Whether an ad appears depends on which account was open, not on who was holding the phone.
The choice of ad follows the conversation. OpenAI says its ads system weighs the context of the current chat, the advertiser's landing page, copy and targeting, and, where personalisation is switched on, signals from the wider account. Personalised ads are not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland, so a buyer in Lyon or Munich sees an ad picked from what the current chat is about. A question about chiller suppliers can bring up an ad for chillers. It cannot bring up an ad because of who the person asking works for.
There is one more split, and it is recent. Since 8 October, ChatGPT on Free and Go has been rolling out GPT-6 Luna, while Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise get GPT-6 Sol. The person who can see your ad is also reading an answer from a different model than the colleague in the corporate workspace. Two members of the same buying committee, asking the same question on the same afternoon, can get different organic answers, and only one of them an ad.
What to find out before the budget goes in
None of this makes ChatGPT ads pointless for a B2B exporter. It makes them a bet on an audience whose size nobody outside OpenAI can measure for you. The honest first step costs nothing: find out which account your buyers use. A sales call can end with one extra question. Do you use ChatGPT to look for suppliers, and is it a company account or your own? Ten answers will not make a statistic. They will tell you more about your own market than any general claim, ours included.
If the answers come back mostly "company account", the sponsored unit is aimed at the people around the decision rather than at the person making it. If they come back "my own, the free one", the ad has a real route to the buyer. Either way, the organic answer is the only part of ChatGPT that every plan shows. It is written by different models depending on the plan, which is why no measurement reproduces a particular buyer's screen, and why a sponsored placement and an organic mention should never be added into one figure.
PSentry measures the organic side: whether ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity name you, in each language you sell in, twice a month. It does not see ChatGPT's ads and does not report them. The ad reaches Free and Go. The answer reaches every plan, in a slightly different version on each, and no account type is excluded from it.
